West Sussex coastal

A garden inspired by native ecology and maritime views

coastal garden with decking, gravel garden, tamarisk trees, garden furniture and steps to beach

This garden, designed for a retired couple living in an Edwardian house in West Sussex, is inspired by the local plant ecology and sweeping sea views. Influenced by the naturalistic approach of Derek Jarman, plants were selected for their ability to withstand local conditions and encourage insect life, whilst creating masses of interest in terms of colour and texture. Locally sourced pebbles were proposed to create a stony, beach-like plane, whilst gabion walls filled with the same were designed to encourage self-seeders to create a tapestry of vertical planting.

Two timber decks, projecting from the house like jetties or pontoons, offer dining and lounge areas, linked by a stroll through the planting. New steps and a gate through the restored knapped flint wall allow the clients, who are keen walkers, directly onto the coastal path.
